Sant Jordi fills Casa Batlló with roses from 21 April
Barcelona is once again preparing for one of spring’s most recognisable sights: the façade of Casa Batlló covered in red roses for Sant Jordi. From 21 April until the evening of the 23rd, the building by Antoni Gaudí becomes a visual symbol of the festival.
More than a thousand handmade flowers decorate the balconies in a tradition begun in 2016 that attracts thousands of people to Passeig de Gràcia every year. To avoid the busiest hours, 22 April is shaping up as the best time to enjoy the façade in all its splendour.
The display is not merely aesthetic. The building's architecture converses with the legend of Sant Jordi: the roof evokes the dragon, the cross symbolises the lance and the balconies suggest the tracks of the defeated animal. Inside, the entrance hall is covered with natural roses, and an olfactory experience is added that reinforces the sensory character of the visit. Casa Batlló, located right on Passeig de Gràcia, becomes one of the city's most photographed spots during these days.
The combination of architecture, tradition and colour has established it as one of the great icons of the diada. During Sant Jordi, the flow of people in this part of the Eixample soars and changes the neighbourhood's usual rhythm. Walking through the centre becomes a more intense experience, with streets full of books, flowers and visitors transforming the city's everyday pace.
