Casa del Sucre is reborn as a community hub in Sagrada Família
Barcelona is finalising plans to bring the emblematic Casa del Sucre back to life, a former flour mill dating from 1893 on Carrer de Cartagena, a stone's throw from Plaça de les Glòries.
The industrial building, preserved for its historical value, will be transformed into a facility open to the whole neighbourhood, with an Espai Jove, rooms for the Castellers, a circus area, a children's esplai and premises for Club de Petanca La Cènia.
The design, inspired by the winning proposal “Espai entre bastidors”, opts for large open-plan, multipurpose spaces: the ground floor for access, esplai and casteller activities; the first floor with youth and meeting areas; and the second level with a high-ceilinged room for circus and castells training.
Access will be via a public passageway that will serve as a climate shelter, while photovoltaic panels will be installed on the roof to cover a large part of consumption. The City Council expects to end the current term with the detailed design ready and start construction in the next one, with the goal that Casa del Sucre will again become, more than a century later, an engine of social life in Sagrada Família.
