La Castellana regains surface traffic after months of closures by the Bernabéu

This Saturday, Paseo de la Castellana reopens to surface traffic after several months of closures due to renovation work at Santiago Bernabéu Metro station. The reopening brings relief to those who cross the city daily and those planning to travel through the area over the weekend, especially on match days or when events take place around the stadium.

The Community of Madrid has confirmed that the works have already passed 40% completion, allowing traffic to be restored at one of the capital’s busiest points. However, the next phase of the refurbishment will begin on 28 March and bring fresh disruption: Metro Line 10 will be interrupted between Nuevos Ministerios and Cuzco until the end of the year, because integrating the current infrastructure with the station’s new design is incompatible with normal service.

To reduce the impact on journeys, Metro de Madrid will introduce a special free bus service covering the affected section, with stops at Plaza de Castilla and frequencies of between 3 and 5 minutes. In addition, Lines L1 and L9 will be reinforced to make alternatives easier for travellers during the months of works. The comprehensive Santiago Bernabéu refurbishment project, with an investment of 66 million euros, seeks to improve accessibility and modernise the city’s public-transport network.
