The DGT launches the V27 virtual triangle and takes a new step towards digital road safety
Spanish roads have a new digital system capable of alerting drivers to accidents even before they see them with their own eyes.
In Spain, the virtual signal V27 has been launched—a new digital tool that alerts drivers to breakdowns and accidents through their vehicles’ onboard systems. The initiative is being promoted by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) as part of its transition towards a more technology-driven road safety model.
Unlike traditional emergency triangles, the V27 does not need to be placed on the road: the signal is activated automatically when a vehicle with an approved V16 beacon transmits information about the incident. The warning is sent to other cars equipped with compatible systems and appears in real time on their screens.
The new format does not change current regulations. The V16 beacon remains mandatory, and the virtual triangle serves only as an additional layer of protection. For now, only the most modern vehicles will be able to benefit from the system, as a significant portion of the vehicle fleet does not yet have the necessary technology.
