Vilanova refurbishes its bus station with changes to stops and access
Vilanova i la Geltrú bus station begins a refurbishment that will be felt in the city’s daily mobility. The works will create new platforms, repair canopies, improve accessibility and renew paving at a key point for people combining bus, train, taxi or journeys on foot around the station.
The work, promoted by the Generalitat, includes the construction of two new platforms and improvements to the existing ones. A sanitary facilities module will also be installed for bus and taxi drivers, an improvement intended for those who work at this transport hub every day.
The first changes will affect parking. From this month, spaces will be removed on Avenida del Ferrocarril, as will those for motorbikes beside the monument to the railway pioneers. The reorganisation will also affect some spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility in the area.
Even so, the whole area will not be blocked. The bicycle station and motorbike parking will continue operating, and access to the Renfe station car park will be guaranteed throughout the process. The aim is to maintain the rail connection while the works progress.
The main disruptions will begin on 6 July, when most bus stops will be temporarily moved to Víctor Balaguer and del Ferrocarril avenues. Intercity buses will depart and arrive via Víctor Balaguer, while Exprés services and lines L68 and L72 will be located on Avenida del Ferrocarril.
The remaining lines will adapt to the new temporary configuration. For regular users, the recommendation will be to check the stop carefully before setting off, especially during the first days of change, when it is easier to get confused or lose time looking for the right point.
The works will be divided into two phases to reduce the impact on the service. First, the new platforms will be built and the northern platform, the one furthest from the main building, will be refurbished. The remodelling of the platform opposite the station will follow.
Throughout the process, the shelters will be repaired and sunken sections of the pavement corrected. These are less striking measures than a new platform, but they are important for the comfort and safety of people waiting for the bus every day, especially older people, users with luggage or residents with reduced mobility.
The taxi service will not change location. Traffic in Eduard Maristany Square, however, will face occasional restrictions, although circulation will be maintained. Access to the station will be via Calle del Forn del Vidre, at the level of Avenida de Víctor Balaguer.
Exit will be possible via Avenida del Ferrocarril or towards Cubelles by the same Calle del Forn del Vidre. These changes will require greater attention to temporary signage, above all in an area where buses, taxis, private cars, pedestrians and Renfe users coincide.
Vilanova bus station is an important part of mobility in Garraf. Its location next to the railway station and close to the urban centre makes it a transit point for students, workers, visitors and residents travelling towards Barcelona, other municipalities in the comarca or the coast.
The refurbishment will not avoid inconvenience over the coming weeks, but it aims to resolve accumulated problems and adapt the station for more comfortable and safer use. For Vilanova, improving this interchange means strengthening an everyday connection: the one linking the centre, the train, buses and the journeys of thousands of people each day.
