Verdaguer reopens after eight weeks: the direct link between L4 and L5 returns
Verdaguer station on the L4 reopened this Monday, 31 August, at 5:00 after being closed for eight weeks for works. Yellow line trains are stopping at the station again and passengers can also once more make the internal interchange with the L5 without having to go out onto the street.
The closure began on 6 July. During this period, L4 continued operating normally between its termini, but trains passed through Verdaguer without stopping. To access the yellow line, users had to travel to Girona or Joanic, while interchange with L5 required alternative routes.
The reopening restores one of the most useful links between Eixample and the rest of the network. TMB puts Verdaguer's usual daily validations at around 6,500 during July and around 4,800 in August, two months when demand is usually lower than at other times of the year.
The eight weeks of closure have been used to raise the L4 platforms, widen the fixed stairways and alter the entrance hall's floor structure. The stairs in the interchange corridor between L4 and L5 have also been removed and replaced by ramps.
This last change makes the route between the two lines easier, but Verdaguer cannot yet be considered fully adapted for people with reduced mobility. Work continues to build the shafts where new lifts and escalators will be installed between the entrance hall and the L4 platforms.
The work corresponds to the first phase of adapting the interchange and has an investment of 8.6 million euros from the Generalitat. The project includes three lifts and must complete the accessibility of the L4 station. The full adaptation of Verdaguer will then require a second phase focused on L5, whose project is still being developed.
The return to normal at Verdaguer follows another important change on the Barcelona Metro: the L1 section between Florida and Plaça de Sants, closed for much of the summer to renew the track, resumed service after works planned until 28 August were completed.
Not all summer closures have ended. From this Monday until 6 September, works on L9 and L10 Nord affect the section between La Sagrera and Bon Pastor. In Catalunya, the internal connecting corridor between L1 and L3 also remains closed until 7 September, so interchange between the two lines must continue to be made via the street.
For Verdaguer users, however, the main change has been in force since the first hours of this Monday: L4 stops at the station again and the direct connection with L5 is open again.
