Fashion Week leaves Ifema because of Formula 1 and spreads across Madrid

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid will change venue completely this September. The arrival of Formula 1 at Ifema has forced the fashion shows to move outside the exhibition grounds, resulting in an unprecedented edition in which more than 60 designers will present their collections in some of the capital's most emblematic spaces.

The calendar will begin on 7 September with an opening fashion show in the Sabatini Gardens, opposite the Royal Palace. From then on, Madrid will become a vast urban catwalk for ten days, with 45 fashion shows, presentations, exhibitions and activities spread across different parts of the city.

The first part of the programme will be led by Madrid is Moda, which will bring the proposals of twelve labels to settings such as the Museo de Historia de Madrid, the Hotel Wellington, the Cloister of the Instituto San Isidro and La Nave. The aim is to bring designer fashion into the urban space and connect design with the city’s heritage.

The main new features include the joint collection by Dolores Promesas and Duyos, the collaboration between Daniel Chong and Eduardo Navarrete, and the celebration of Devota & Lomba’s 40th anniversary. Established labels such as Roberto Verino, Roberto Torretta, Dominnico, García Madrid, Ángel Schlesser, Custo Barcelona, Oteyza and Juan Vidal will also show their work.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week will take over from 14 to 19 September. The Glasshouse of the Arganzuela Crystal Palace will host the opening day, while other fashion shows will take place at the Palacio de Cibeles, the Rosaleda del Parque del Oeste and the Hotel Palace. The main new feature will be the transfer of the bulk of the programme to the Campus de Comunicación y Artes of Universidad Nebrija, which will become the catwalk’s new venue for this edition.

The programme will also include Palomo Spain’s tenth anniversary, the return of labels such as Moisés Nieto, Alvarno and Redondo Brand, as well as the day dedicated to new talent with the EGO catwalk. In this edition, Hannibal Laguna will receive the National Designer Award and the Colombian label Agua by Agua Bendita will be recognised as International Designer.

The transformation directly responds to the works for the future Formula 1 circuit, which will occupy part of Ifema’s facilities in the coming months. Far from limiting the event, this change promotes a new model that integrates fashion into different corners of the city and turns historic buildings, gardens and cultural spaces into showcases open to the public, reinforcing Madrid’s role as one of Europe’s major design capitals.
