Font Màgica warms up to shine again at La Mercè
After almost three years in silence, Font Màgica de Montjuïc is preparing to dazzle again. The emblematic fountain, a symbol of Barcelona at its most spectacular since the 1929 International Exposition, will begin operating again in September, coinciding with the La Mercè festivities.
The facility has already begun to be filled with groundwater in order to carry out the first leak-tightness tests. Over the coming weeks, the circuits, lighting and sound will be put into operation to ensure that everything is ready for the eagerly awaited return of its show of light, music and water.
This long stoppage, made necessary by the drought, has also served to thoroughly renovate the system. The refurbishment, with an investment of 3 million euros, has made it possible to modernise the fountain according to sustainability and energy-efficiency criteria. One of the most notable changes will be the new lighting system: 680 LED spotlights will replace the old ones, reducing power from 1,507 kW to just 72, without losing brightness or spectacle.
Meanwhile, Barcelona is also strengthening its urban water spaces to combat the heat. Today, the ninth water-play area was opened in Plaça de les Caramelles, in Raval, joining the climate shelters already installed in different neighbourhoods of the city.
