The Font Màgica de Montjuïc returns for La Mercè with new life and greater sustainability
Barcelona is bringing back one of its most beloved symbols. On 24 September, the day of La Mercè, water will once again flow in the Font Màgica de Montjuïc and in the fountains along the Reina Maria Cristina avenue, after months of restoration.
The grand unveiling will be the Piromusical on 28 September, which will premiere a renewed water, light and sound show thanks to an advanced control system and the replacement of almost 5,000 incandescent bulbs with low-consumption LED spotlights. The energy leap is significant: from 1,507 kW to just 72 kW, ensuring a more sustainable show without losing intensity.
The project, included in the Pla Endreça, is the fountain’s biggest update in three decades. During the summer, the new hydraulic circuits, valves and 380 submerged spotlights that will illuminate the water with unprecedented choreographies have been tested.
From 2 October, the shows will return at their usual times, with repertoires ranging from classical music to jazz, including rock, rumba and film soundtracks. At Christmas, the fountain will offer special choreographies with Christmas carols.
With this renewal, the Font Màgica not only recovers its historic splendour, but also adapts to the future with a balance between tradition, innovation and sustainability.
