The Cibeles fountain will be restored between June and October 2026

One of Madrid’s most recognisable symbols, the Cibeles fountain, will undergo a well-deserved restoration process from June 2026. The intervention, promoted by the City Council of Madrid, responds to deterioration identified after technical studies carried out during the first months of 2025. The works will run until October of that same year and seek to preserve both the beauty and integrity of this important sculptural ensemble.

The restoration plan includes removing embedded dirt, treating cracks, stabilising damaged elements and restoring metal pieces affected by oxidation. Biocidal products and protective treatments will also be applied to guarantee its long-term conservation. Cleaning will be meticulous and adapted to each area, paying particular attention to the original stone and joins between pieces.

Designed in 1777 by Ventura Rodríguez, the fountain depicts the goddess Cibeles in her chariot drawn by two lions, Hipómenes and Atalanta, sculpted by Francisco Gutiérrez and Roberto Michel. Located in the heart of the capital and surrounded by buildings such as the Banco de España and Palacio de Cibeles, this restoration aims to restore the splendour it deserves without altering its historical essence. During the work it will remain protected, and efforts will be made to minimise the visual impact for visitors and Madrid residents who pass by it daily.
