The Generalitat gives away 150,000 glasses to see the great solar eclipse
Catalunya is preparing a special mobility, security and health-protection operation for the solar eclipse on 12 August. The phenomenon will be observable throughout the territory, although totality will be concentrated in the south and west, where the largest influx of visitors is expected.
The Generalitat will set up 23 official observation points spread across 18 municipalities. Together, these spaces will have capacity for around 50,000 people and have been chosen for their visibility, accessibility and ability to manage large crowds.
At them, 150,000 approved glasses for observing the Sun will be distributed free of charge. They must comply with ISO 12312-2 and be used during the partial phases, since ordinary sunglasses, X-rays and other homemade filters do not protect the retina.
The eclipse will take place approximately between 19.30 and 21.00, depending on the municipality. In Barcelona it will be seen partially, while several areas of Tarragona, Terres de l’Ebre and Ponent will lie within the path of totality.
Mobility will be one of the day’s main challenges. Trànsit expects a heavy concentration of vehicles on the AP-7 and recommends considering alternatives such as the A-2, AP-2, N-340 or A-7 before setting off.
Restrictions will also apply to certain heavy vehicles between Martorell and Ulldecona during the afternoon and night. Officers will pay particular attention to ensuring that nobody stops on hard shoulders, access roads or carriageways to observe the phenomenon.
The operation will involve around 700 Mossos d’Esquadra officers, as well as drones, helicopters and specialist units. Protecció Civil will keep Procicat on pre-alert between 11 and 13 August, while 112 will reinforce its teams in response to a possible increase in calls.
The Agents Rurals will intensify surveillance in natural areas because of the risk of fires and crowds. The day will leave busier roads and full viewpoints at sunset, so the recommendation is to choose the point in advance, bring water and always follow safety instructions.
