Gran Vía turns green with Spain’s largest Irish parade

This weekend Madrid dresses in green and changes its rhythm: Gran Vía hosts Spain's largest Irish parade, with more than 1,200 participants — pipers, dancers and cultural groups — who will turn the main thoroughfare into a Celtic corridor full of music, dancing and festive atmosphere. The parade starts at 17:00 from the Metrópolis building (Alcalá/Gran Vía) and proceeds to Plaza de España. Nearly 600 pipers from 40 bands across Spain, Irish dance groups and Atlantic collectives take part. The initiative is promoted by the Asturian musician Bras Rodrigo and the Fundación Banda de Gaitas de Corvera, with the support of Irish institutions and Madrid City Council.

At the end, Callao square will host a free closing concert with Bras Rodrigo and the St. Laurence O’Toole Pipe Band from Dublin. The week already includes the “Green Vía” at Gran Vía Metro station (decorated in green with daily performances) and extends with céilís, Irish cinema, dramatised readings, literary cafés and Celtic-music nights at venues such as Galileo Galilei and Nazca. Most activities are free until capacity is reached.
