Gran Vía is transformed: St. Patrick’s parade sets a new attendance record
Madrid is preparing for one of the year's biggest celebrations. The St. Patrick’s parade will turn Gran Vía green and is expected to exceed 250,000 attendees. The city is adapting its programme and mobility to host concerts and activities right in the centre.
This March, Gran Vía will become the epicentre of one of the most recognisable international celebrations: the St Patrick’s parade returns in force and is expected to bring together more than 250,000 people in the very heart of Madrid. The event, already established as an essential date in the city’s cultural calendar, will take place on Saturday 14 March 2026 between 17:00 and 19:00, and promises to alter the centre’s usual rhythm throughout the day.
The event is organised by Guinness, which will once again surprise audiences with its emblematic bus and a programme designed for all audiences. This year, the special tribute will be to the band U2, adding a musical nod to the Irish tradition that has an ever-growing following in Madrid. Last year, attendance already exceeded 200,000, and all signs point to the figure continuing to rise.
The parade is only the highlight of a week full of activities. The fifth edition of the IV Semana de Irlanda, promoted by Turismo de Irlanda, will roll out a varied programme between 10 and 17 March 2026. Among the offerings are free concerts in Callao square, scheduled for the same Saturday 14 March between 20:00 and 22:00, which will extend the celebration well into the night.
Saturday morning will also be lively: between 11:00 and 13:00, several performances will set the festive mood before the parade. At the end of the march, the St. Laurence O’Toole Pipe Band —one of Ireland’s most renowned ensembles— will provide the musical finale to the day, strengthening the bond between Madrid and Irish culture.
Gran Vía, accustomed to hosting demonstrations, premieres and celebrations, adapts every year to St Patrick’s green tide. Its ability to transform the pulse of the city and become the setting for major events has established it as the place where Madrid shows its most open and cosmopolitan side. During these days, the centre fills with visitors, music and activities that invite people to rediscover the city from another perspective. Madrid is already starting to move in that direction.
