Sant Jordi bookshop reinvents itself to keep making history
After 41 years as a refuge for readers in Barcelona’s Gòtic district, the emblematic Sant Jordi bookshop will enjoy a second life.
It closed its doors in February following the death of its historic bookseller, Josep Morales, but it is now being reborn with a new proposal that combines books, culture and gastronomy.
The project, promoted by the Barcelona agency Temps d’Oci, seeks to preserve the soul of the place while transforming it into an open, contemporary space. The premises on Ferràn street will retain their literary essence, but will add a café with locally sourced products and a cultural programme designed for residents, the curious and lovers of literature.
«The intention is to offer a lively, welcoming place, a meeting point that connects with Barcelona’s identity», say the new managers. Reopening is planned for the end of summer 2025, and it promises to become a new cultural heart of the neighbourhood.
With this commitment, the city is recovering not only a bookshop, but also a symbol. Sant Jordi will open its pages again, more alive than ever.
