Bus route 56 extends its route and connects Numancia with the centre
EMT route 56 adds nine new stops and reaches Mercado de Doña Carlota. The change eliminates transfers in Puente de Vallecas and improves access to hospitals and shopping areas. It affects thousands of daily passengers.
The route of bus line 56 is changing the rhythm of those travelling between central Madrid and its south-east. From now on it extends to Mercado de Doña Carlota, in Numancia, with nine new stops that respond to neighbourhood demand and eliminate the change at Puente de Vallecas. Travellers will therefore be able to reach destinations such as Hospital Gregorio Marañón, Hospital Beata María Ana, Plaza de Manuel Becerra and the Goya shopping area directly.
The line, which since 1965 linked Diego de León with Puente de Vallecas, is being renamed Diego de León–Numancia. In the Numancia direction it runs along Avenida de Peña Prieta and continues via Alfonso XIII and Santa Marta to its new terminus on Doctor Lozano Street, next to the market; in the Diego de León direction it passes through Sierra Toledana, Camino de Valderribas and Puente de Vallecas before rejoining Avenida Ciudad de Barcelona. To maintain the usual frequency, EMT is reinforcing the service with three additional buses on weekdays and one more at weekends.
The extension aims to make daily mobility easier, better connect neighbourhoods and essential services, and avoid unnecessary interchanges. The new terminus at Mercado de Doña Carlota, one of Numancia’s meeting points, also reinforces the market’s role in the everyday life of the neighbourhood.
