Madrid Metro Line 6 prepares to operate without a driver
Mobility in Madrid enters a new phase. Line 6 of Madrid Metro, one of the network’s most used lines, is preparing to operate driverless trains from 2027, a change that will transform the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of passengers.
The process has already begun at the Laguna depot, where the facilities are being adapted to automatically manage the new fleet. This space, which is key to train maintenance, will become a centre equipped to operate remotely and coordinate the running of the entire line.
Automation will take place in two phases. First, by installing control systems and training staff. Then, with technical tests to validate safety and the new operating model before it is fully launched. The investment exceeds 20 million euros.
For users, the impact will be direct: trains are expected to run up to 33% faster and frequency will drop to just two minutes. In addition, 48 new trains will be added, which are larger and more accessible, designed to meet the high demand on the line.
The modernisation also includes installing automatic platform doors, a key measure to improve safety and enable driverless train operation.
The automation of the Circular is redefining how Madrid moves. Shorter waits and greater capacity will ease pressure on one of the busiest lines, paving the way for more efficient and technologically advanced public transport.
