Mar Bella reinvents itself: from forgotten plot to green lung by the sea
Barcelona has set in motion the long-awaited transformation of the Mar Bella promenade, the last corner of the coast that had not yet spoken the language of the 21st century. Where there was once only scattered sand and disconnected traces, a new space full of life, vegetation and a direct connection to the sea will soon emerge.
The project, with a budget of €17.8 million, will turn the central stretch of the promenade into a green corridor designed to withstand the onslaught of the climate and restore the relationship between the city and the Mediterranean. Although work will begin later than expected — after a redesign to make it more robust in the face of storms — the horizon remains clear: spring 2027 will mark the promenade’s rebirth.
But it is not only about landscape: the new promenade will also promote sports. The Agapito Fernández football pitch will move to the Fòrum, and the Pavelló Blau will give shape to an ambitious idea: making Barcelona’s coastline a great stage for outdoor sport.
