Madrid plans two new Cercanías stations at Las Rejas and Campo de las Naciones

The Rejas neighbourhood will finally have its Cercanías station. Construction is already under way and will change mobility in San Blas-Canillejas. A new stop next to IFEMA is also planned. Madrid is adding key connections.

The Rejas neighbourhood, in San Blas-Canillejas, will leave years of isolation behind thanks to the future Cercanías Las Rejas station. The tender for the works, announced this week by Adif, marks a turning point for those who live and work in the area. More than two million euros will be invested in this project, which also includes a new station at Campo de las Naciones, next to IFEMA.

Las Rejas station will be located on the grounds of the former O’Donnell freight station, a space where trains had until now only been seen passing without stopping. Neighbourhood associations had long been calling for a halt that would connect the district with the rest of the city and, at last, that demand is taking shape.

Before the works begin, the project will undergo an Estudio de Alternativas. This process will be used to define the best technical solution and the final configuration of both Las Rejas and the station planned in the vicinity of IFEMA.

When it comes into service, Las Rejas station will serve not only the neighbourhood’s residents, but also those who live in the former Ciudad Pegaso and those who frequent key places such as the Plenilunio shopping centre. The improvement in mobility will be tangible in everyday life, particularly for those who depend on public transport for their usual journeys.

Adif explains that this measure forms part of the modernisation of the Hortaleza-San Fernando de Henares section, strengthening the Cercanías service in the neighbourhoods bordering the so-called «línea de contorno», which links Chamartín with the Corredor del Henares.

At the same time, the future Campo de las Naciones station will be located between Ribera del Sena and Ribera del Loira streets, facilitating direct access to IFEMA and to the area’s new business and residential developments.

The Cercanías line that crosses eastern Madrid has traditionally been a through route, with few stops and little integration into the everyday life of the neighbourhoods. The arrival of new stations such as Las Rejas and Campo de las Naciones responds to a growing demand for quicker, more direct connections. Madrid is already starting to move in that direction, adapting its transport network to the real needs of those who use it every day.
