Plaça de la Vila de Madrid is launching cultural activities for local residents. Pla de Barris is promoting a programme intended to return the space to local life. There will be workshops, concerts and activities for all ages. The Gòtic neighbourhood is preparing for a different year.

Plaça de la Vila de Madrid, in the very heart of the Gòtic, is beginning a new phase that promises to change the routine of people who live in and walk through the area. From this Saturday, the space will be filled with cultural activities for those looking for something beyond the usual tourist bustle. Pla de Barris de Ciutat Vella is committed to returning the square to local residents, with activities that invite people to stay, take part and share.

The programme begins with a chess day beneath the pergola and walkway, open to all ages and backgrounds. From 11 in the morning until 1 in the afternoon, the square will become a giant chessboard where strategy and community life will take centre stage. This first event, organised by Ateneu Barcelonès and Jardí del Pop, marks the beginning of a calendar that will run throughout 2026.

The aim is clear: to make more room for everyday life in the face of tourist pressure and commercial saturation. The square, where archaeological remains, children's play areas, terraces and shops coexist, now seeks to become a genuine meeting point for families, older people, young people and people from diverse backgrounds. The programme includes everything from photographic exhibitions and storytelling to painting workshops, urban sketching, printmaking, concerts and cultural lecture series.

Behind this initiative is joint work by cultural organisations, neighbourhood associations and local facilities. Groups such as Fotogràfica de Catalunya, Antic Gremi de Revenedors, Barnacentre, Biblioteca Andreu Nin, Centre Cívic Pati Llimona, Cercle Artístic Sant Lluc, Museu d’Història de Barcelona and Xarxa Veïnal del Gòtic, among others, have joined forces to devise a programme that responds to the real needs of the neighbourhood.

The commitment to social cohesion and community life is reflected in every activity, with particular attention to groups such as older people, women, teenagers and those who have arrived from elsewhere. The square is thus preparing to become a laboratory for coexistence and creativity, where each week may bring a different surprise.

Plaça de la Vila de Madrid is one of those corners of the Gòtic that, despite its strategic location, often goes unnoticed amid the comings and goings of tourists and commercial activity. Its history is marked by the coexistence of past and present: beneath the pavement lie remains of the ancient Roman necropolis, while on the surface children's play areas and modern terraces mingle. The new cultural programme seeks precisely to reconcile these two worlds, restoring prominence to the people who make a neighbourhood day by day and opening the door to new ways of experiencing public space in central Barcelona.
