Plaza del Rastrillo reinvents itself: a new urban space for central Madrid

The City Council has launched an intervention valued at 2 million euros that will continue until the second half of 2026 and aims to turn this area into a benchmark for accessibility, sustainability and neighbourhood life. The works cover not only the square, but also Espíritu Santo, Tesoro, San Andrés and Marqués de Santa Ana streets. The plan includes the comprehensive renewal of paving and lighting, the installation of modern, functional street furniture, and the creation of larger areas for staying. Vegetation will also play a leading role: dozens of new trees and hundreds of shrubs will be planted, improving the landscape and providing natural shade. The redesign includes distinctive features, such as a large circular fountain and a water-misting system that will cool the atmosphere in summer. The children's play equipment will be moved to a covered area to protect it from the sun, and paths and access points will be adapted to remove any architectural barrier. This intervention forms part of a municipal strategy to reclaim and modernise squares throughout the city, committing to friendlier, greener spaces designed for people to meet. With Plaza del Rastrillo, Centro de Madrid will gain a renewed spot for walking, resting and living together.
