Drinks containing prescription-free viagra detected in neighbourhood shops in Barcelona
Barcelona is experiencing a case already causing concern in several neighbourhoods. Authorities have withdrawn from the market more than 200 bottles of cocktails containing viagra which were being sold without prescription in Latin American product supermarkets.
The operation ended with the arrest of the owner of the establishments and his daughter, while another six people are under investigation. The products, known as ‘Mero Macho’, were promoted as sexual enhancers despite failing to comply with regulations.
The problem goes beyond legality. Many customers did not know what they were actually consuming. The presence of substances such as Viagra in drinks without medical supervision poses a direct health risk.
The sale of this type of product is strictly regulated in Spain. They may only be dispensed in pharmacies and with a prescription. Outside that system, any marketing is considered illegal.
The case also puts the spotlight on the role of social networks, where these cocktails were actively promoted, extending their reach without clear controls. This makes it easier for them to reach more people without guarantees.
What happened reinforces a growing concern in the city: the circulation of unauthorised products in local shops. Beyond the penalties, the impact is felt in residents' trust and in the safety of everyday consumption.
