The Puerta de Alcalá will open to pedestrians with a renovated boulevard in 2027

Puerta de Alcalá will cease to be only a monument to contemplate from afar: from 2027, Madrilenians and visitors will be able to walk through it thanks to the transformation of the boulevard around it. The project, which starts in February, will make it possible to travel along the axis between Cibeles and the monument, both centrally and across it, restoring this space's character as an emblematic gateway to the city.

The renovation includes the creation of a central promenade that will offer new views of Puerta de Alcalá, one of the great symbols of the Paisaje de la Luz. The aim is to end the isolation caused by traffic and bring the monument closer to urban life, as the Works and Facilities delegate explained after the year's first governing board meeting.

José Luis Martínez-Almeida's team is thus seeking to restore prominence to this Madrid icon before the next municipal elections. The works, which will extend until the end of the term of office, also include widening pavements and recovering the original trees from the 1960s, transforming the surroundings into a friendlier, more accessible space for everyone.
