Gaudí will finally receive his long-pending tribute at Sagrada Família after more than a century
Barcelona is preparing a change that will once again alter the image of Basílica de la Sagrada Família. The temple’s Patronat has approved the construction of the monument Antoni Gaudí designed to pay tribute to Bishop Torras i Bages, an idea that had gone unfulfilled for more than one hundred years.
The intervention will include a large sculpture up to 20 metres high, which will be installed on the Passion façade. The project follows the original drawing left by Gaudí and recovers a little-known part of his vision for the temple.
The relationship between the architect and the bishop was key in the history of the Sagrada Família. Torras i Bages supported Gaudí at one of his most difficult moments and reinforced his spiritual commitment to the work, something that profoundly shaped the project’s final development.
The decision comes at a time of further transformations around the temple. Every intervention at the Sagrada Família changes not only the building, but also the urban landscape and the flow of visitors at one of Barcelona’s busiest points.
The monument will reinforce the symbolic character of the Passion façade and add a new monumental element visible from different points in the surrounding area. The intervention seeks to keep the architect’s original legacy alive within a work that continues to evolve.
Barcelona is thus reactivating one of its great cultural icons. More than a century later, the city recovers a pending piece of Gaudí’s universe and once again redefines the silhouette of the Sagrada Família.
