The Sierra de Guadarrama grows by 4.7% and adds new nature trails
The Parque Nacional de la Sierra de Guadarrama has expanded its area by more than 1,600 hectares, an increase of 4.7%, opening up new nature options for those living in Madrid. The decision, approved by the Consejo de Ministros, strengthens the park’s role as one of the region’s major green destinations.
The expansion incorporates areas of high ecological value such as Cabeza de Hierro and the El Paular estate, along with woodland in municipalities such as Lozoya, Soto del Real, Miraflores de la Sierra and Rascafría. These settings stand out for their diversity of forests and for being home to emblematic species.
With this extension, the park reaches 33,960 hectares and consolidates its position as one of Spain's most important, with more than 2.5 million visitors a year.
The project has involved an investment of €4.4 million and has included public consultation processes to balance conservation with public use.
As well as protecting unique ecosystems, the expansion makes it easier to access new trails, viewpoints and recreational areas, broadening the range of getaways less than an hour from the city.
At a time of growing interest in outdoor leisure, Sierra de Guadarrama strengthens its role as a link between Madrid and nature, adapting to an ever-increasing demand for green spaces and sustainable experiences.
