Zarzuela to be declared Bien de Interés Cultural, strengthening its role in Madrid
Zarzuela takes another step forward in its recognition in Madrid. The Community has decided to declare it Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) as Patrimonio Inmaterial, a measure that strengthens its protection and its presence in the cultural life of the city.
This momentum comes after the genre was recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage at national level in 2024. Now, Madrid underlines its historic link with a tradition that was born in the city in the 17th century and has portrayed Madrid’s everyday life for centuries.
Zarzuela developed especially in the 19th century, with formats ranging from major productions close to opera to the so-called “zarzuela chica”, shorter and more popular. Works such as La verbena de la Paloma and La Gran Vía continue to form part of the city’s cultural imagination.
The new recognition is not merely symbolic. The declaration as an Asset of Cultural Interest will make it possible to promote its programming in theatres and municipal spaces, as well as bring it closer to new audiences. In this context, places such as the Teatro de la Zarzuela reinforce their role as the epicentre of this genre.
Throughout the 20th century, zarzuela knew how to adapt to social changes and also expand into Latin America, where it incorporated new styles and local elements. Today, its repertoire exceeds 10,000 titles and remains alive thanks to companies, musicians and cultural spaces.
Beyond the stages, zarzuela is part of Madrid’s identity. Its music and stories have served for decades to tell the city from within. With this new protection, Madrid is committed to preserving that legacy and keeping it present in its cultural agenda.
