Via Laietana cameras will start issuing fines and change mobility in the centre
Via Laietana is preparing for a change that will directly affect traffic in central Barcelona. From 27 April, cameras installed in the uphill lane will begin fining vehicles travelling without authorisation.
The measure restricts access to residents, shopkeepers, taxis, buses, essential services, and authorised users of car parks, hotels, and workshops. Anyone needing to use this road must register their licence plate in advance to avoid a €90 fine.
Registration is already open for local residents and those from Barceloneta, as well as other users with justified access. Customers of businesses can also drive through without penalty, provided their details have been submitted in advance.
The system is being activated after several months of delay compared to the original schedule. Once operational, monitoring will be automatic and continuous, effectively reducing unauthorised traffic on one of the main routes connecting the historic centre and the seafront.
The transformation of Via Laietana is part of a broader strategy to prioritise public transport and sustainable mobility. Reducing private traffic aims to improve air quality and strengthen the pedestrian and commercial character of one of the city's busiest avenues.
