Night-time heat disrupts sleep and makes rest difficult in Barcelona
Nights of intense heat are making it harder to rest in Barcelona, and the problem goes beyond sleeping too little. When the temperature does not drop enough, many people wake several times, rest less well and carry more fatigue, irritability and lack of concentration into the following day.
The body needs to cool down in order to enter deep sleep. If the room remains too hot overnight, that process is disrupted and rest becomes fragmented. The result is a feeling of light sleep, frequent awakenings and greater difficulty recovering energy.
That poor rest has quick effects on daily life. It can become harder to pay attention, react quickly or keep one’s mood stable. In a city where many people get up early, drive, work with the public or make a series of long journeys, poor sleep is noticeable straight away.
It can also affect physical health. Hot nights can alter blood pressure, heart rate and metabolic control, especially in people with cardiovascular problems, diabetes or other pre-existing conditions. For the most vulnerable, nighttime heat is not just a nuisance: it can become a risk factor.
The danger is not limited to people who already have diagnosed illnesses. Lack of sleep increases daytime drowsiness and reduces reaction capacity, which is especially delicate when driving, working with machinery or carrying out tasks requiring constant attention.
Simple measures can help protect rest. It is advisable to keep windows closed during the sunniest hours, ventilate as evening falls, cool the room before going to bed and wear light, breathable clothing. A lukewarm shower before sleeping can also help reduce the sensation of heat.
Hydration is another key point, but without overdoing it just before bed in order to avoid waking up. Reducing screens, heavy dinners and alcohol at night also helps, because they can further worsen sleep already affected by high temperatures.
Nighttime heat is becoming an increasingly visible part of the urban summer. In Barcelona, where many flats accumulate heat throughout the day, caring for rest is beginning to be as important as protecting oneself from the sun: sleeping well shapes how one lives, works and gets around the following day.
