Zarzuela takes over La Latina with classics and live music
Zarzuela will once again take centre stage in Madrid's cultural calendar this August. Teatro La Latina will host some of the genre's best-known works over several weeks, featuring a live orchestra and a programme designed for those looking for an alternative to the usual summer plans.
The series will begin with “La verbena de la Paloma”, which will be performed from 12 to 16 August. It will be followed by “El barberillo de Lavapiés”, from the 19th to the 23rd, and “Luisa Fernanda”, scheduled between the 26th and 30th of the same month.
The programme will continue until 6 September and will also include works such as “La tabernera del puerto”, “La Gran Vía”, “La revoltosa” and a version of “La Traviata”. The proposal combines titles deeply linked to Madrid with works from a broader lyrical repertoire.
Performances will take place from Wednesday to Saturday at 19:00 and on Sundays at 20:00. Each performance will last approximately two hours, with a fifteen-minute interval.
Individual tickets and season tickets are already available. The programme seeks to attract both regular enthusiasts and those who want to approach zarzuela for the first time in a complete stage format with live musicians.
The appeal of the series also lies in its surroundings. Teatro La Latina is a few steps from squares, terraces and streets that retain much of the traditional pulse of the centre, so a theatre outing can form part of a full afternoon in the neighbourhood.
In the middle of August, when part of the city reduces its activity, the programme offers a reason to stay in Madrid and rediscover a tradition that continues to connect generations. The night leaves theatre lights, live voices and a neighbourhood that looks at itself again in its own stories.
