L’Illa Diagonal unveils its new look with a grand celebration
The L’Illa Diagonal shopping centre has officially presented the completion of its comprehensive refurbishment with a major celebration that will last for three days.
The event, marked by circus, music and dance performances, had as its star moment the performance of a tightrope walker who crossed more than 60 metres above the gardens at a height of 20 metres, leaving the audience breathless.
The transformation, the result of an investment of 32 million euros, has meant a complete refurbishment of the centre, opened in 1993. One of the main focuses of the overhaul has been the restoration of the Sant Joan de Déu gardens, with 8,000 square metres redesigned by the BatlleiRoig studio. The new space includes children's play areas, water play zones and an open-air amphitheatre, intended to give greater prominence to community life.
The project has been financed through a public-private partnership formula. L’Illa Diagonal contributed 3.8 million euros, while the Ayuntamiento de Barcelona took charge of works management and safety. This model was already applied last year in the Clara Campoamor gardens, in Les Corts.
With this facelift, L’Illa Diagonal is not only modernising as a shopping centre, but also reinforcing its role as a civic meeting space in the heart of the Diagonal.
