Lise Davidsen dazzles at the Liceu in a minimalist Tristan und Isolde

Gran Teatre del Liceu becomes an operatic epicentre with the premiere of 'Tristán e Isolda', a minimalist production marking soprano Lise Davidsen's world debut in the role of Isolde. Under the musical direction of Susanna Mälkki and with set design by Bárbara Lluch, Wagner's opera is presented as the season's major bet and will run until 31 January.

The proposal stands out for having three women leading the orchestra, set design and principal role, an unusual fact in the world of opera. American tenor Clay Hilley takes on the role of Tristan, while Víctor García de Gomar, the Liceu's artistic director, emphasises the international significance of this premiere for Barcelona's theatre.

Bárbara Lluch, who returns to the Liceu after previous productions, highlights the creative freedom and commitment involved in working on this opera, regarded as revolutionary in musical history. Inspired by a 12th-century legend, the story of 'Tristán e Isolda' explores the transformation of hate into passionate and tragic love, with austere set design and a play of light inspired by Turner, designed by Urs Schönebaum.

The four-and-a-half-hour performance focuses on Lise Davidsen, who returns to the stage after maternity leave. The soprano compares preparing the role of Isolde to a marathon, while Hilley, with 15 previous performances of the work, highlights the role's demands. Mälkki considers this premiere special and says the opera raises vital questions, requiring a high-level performance from the entire cast.

The production can be seen on the Liceu Ópera+ platform from 15 February.
