The sun will not take centre stage again in Barcelona until midweek
Barcelona starts the week with umbrellas in hand and completely overcast skies. This Monday the city is experiencing intense rain and brief storms already affecting mobility, terraces and many outdoor plans from early morning.
According to Meteocat forecasts, the most difficult period will come between 14:00 and 15:00, when rainfall could leave accumulations of up to 20 litres per square metre in barely an hour. Although the weather warning is at a low level, the local intensity of some showers may cause localised problems and force people to change their routines on the fly.
Conditions remain unstable across virtually the entire metropolitan area. During the morning, grey skies and a feeling of humidity predominate, while in the afternoon storms could break more forcefully in parts of the Barcelona coast and pre-coastal area.
The change in weather is also noticeable in the temperatures. It feels cooler than on previous days, and the humid wind reinforces that feeling of an unpleasant day, especially near the sea and in open areas of the city.
The forecast does not improve much for Tuesday. Cloud cover will continue to dominate the sky and intermittent rain may still appear at different times of the day. It will not be until Wednesday that the anticyclone regains ground and the sun gradually prevails again over the instability.
In Barcelona, these types of spring episodes tend to appear quickly and in a concentrated way. The combination of Mediterranean humidity and the arrival of cold air at altitude favours short but very intense storms, capable of completely changing the city's rhythm in a matter of minutes. That is why, on days like today, checking the weather radar before going out can make the difference between arriving dry and ending up caught under an unexpected downpour.
