Madrid’s intercity buses introduce «contactless» payment
Since September 2025, passengers on intercity buses in the Community of Madrid have been able to pay their single fare by card, mobile phone or smartwatch, removing the need for cash.
Getting around the municipalities of the Comunidad de Madrid by bus will now be easier. The intercity network has introduced contactless payment, allowing users to validate their journey by tapping a bank card, mobile phone, or smartwatch on the vehicle’s reader.
This measure puts an end to one of the service’s long-standing limitations: until now, those without a travel pass had to pay in cash, with the restriction that payments could not exceed 10 euros. The new system speeds up boarding, reduces cash use, and fits with current technology habits, improving the travel experience for both residents and tourists.
The introduction of contactless payment is part of the strategy to modernise public transport in Madrid, aiming to offer faster, safer, and more accessible services. In addition to making daily life easier for thousands of travellers, this measure brings the intercity bus network closer to the technological standards of major European capitals.
