El Retiro clocks up 13 closures in three months and reopens the debate over its use
Parque del Retiro has recorded thirteen closures in just three months, a figure that is starting to disrupt the routine of thousands of people in Madrid. The park, key both for leisure and for mobility between neighbourhoods, has been affected by increasingly frequent restrictions.
Most of the closures are due to the municipal protocol activated in adverse weather conditions. Wind episodes with gusts of up to 70 km/h, according to AEMET, have forced access to be restricted because of the risk of falling branches in an environment with abundant century-old trees.
The city council stresses the preventive nature of these measures, designed to avoid accidents. However, the repeated closures have caused inconvenience among local residents and regular users, who rely on the park as a thoroughfare or an everyday space.
Each restriction entails diversions, longer journeys and changes to daily organisation, especially on working days. Added to this is the impact on nearby businesses and cultural activities, at a time when spring increases the number of visitors to the park.
The debate now centres on the balance between safety and accessibility. While some defend the need to maintain strict criteria, others call for the protocol to be reviewed so that it can better adapt to intensive use of the space.
Meanwhile, the Plan Director del Retiro remains pending and will have to define the park's future and its management. Until then, closures will continue to set the pace at one of the city's most emblematic spaces.
