Classics leave the classroom: pupils experience Lope and Calderón in real settings
Madrid proposes a different way of approaching literature that is already having an impact in classrooms. Students from several secondary schools will read Lope de Vega and Pedro Calderón de la Barca in historic spaces, in an experience that takes classics out of the book and into real life.
The initiative, called “Lend Me Your Words”, takes place in venues such as the Casa Natal de Cervantes and the Casa Museo Lope de Vega. Over several days in May, around 200 pupils will take part in recitals and dramatised readings designed to connect with their way of seeing the world.
The works are not presented as they are. They are adapted using more familiar stage codes, seeking to ensure that students recognise themselves in the conflicts and emotions. Titles such as La dama boba or La vida es sueño are reinterpreted so that they do not feel distant or compulsory.
After each session comes a key part: dialogue. The pupils share impressions, doubts and their own readings, turning the activity into something participatory. In addition, the work begins earlier, in the classroom, with materials prepared to put the works in context.
The change is no small one. For many students, this kind of experience breaks down the usual barrier to the classics and makes them more accessible. Literature stops being only a subject and begins to feel like something alive.
Madrid thus strengthens a clear trend: integrating culture into the city's everyday experience. When classics are experienced outside the classroom, the connection with them changes, and that can shape how new generations understand and use culture.
