The Caterina Albert gardens will be renewed with more shade and greenery
The Caterina Albert gardens, in Camp d’en Grassot, will be transformed in 2027. The Gràcia district has already presented residents with the refurbishment project, which seeks to turn this inner block space into a greener, more comfortable place better prepared for the hot months.
Work is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027. The intervention will affect the space between Rosselló Street, Mariner Passage, Sicília Street and Nàpols Street, an area used every day by local residents, families and people looking for a quiet corner within the neighbourhood.
One of the most anticipated changes will be the creation of two shaded areas with textile awnings. The proposal comes from residents’ contributions and will make it possible to protect both seating areas and part of the children’s play area from the sun, something increasingly necessary in a Barcelona with longer, harsher summers.
The refurbishment will also add more vegetation with new flowerbeds. It is not just about beautifying the space: more greenery and shade can make the garden usable for more hours of the day, especially for families with children, older people and residents who currently avoid the square when the sun is blazing.
The project will renew the street furniture and children’s play equipment, and will add table-tennis and futtoc tables. The idea is for the block interior to function not only as a passageway, but as a place for staying, playing and meeting for the neighbourhood.
The intervention also includes work on the underground municipal car park. Repairs and waterproofing improvements will be carried out to prevent leaks from outside, a less visible part of the project but one that is important for the proper functioning of the whole.
Total investment is around €2.9 million: €1.6 million for refurbishing the gardens and €1.3 million for improvements to the car park. The intervention adds to other Barcelona projects intended to create greener local spaces adapted to the heat.
The renewal of the Caterina Albert gardens may change a very specific routine: going down to play, sitting in the shade, meeting neighbours or crossing the block interior without the heat making it an uncomfortable place. In a densely built-up neighbourhood, gaining a space like this is no small thing.
