La Salut will gain a new open garden next to Park Güell
La Salut is beginning to reclaim a space that was closed to the neighbourhood for years. The Font del Carbó gardens, on carrer de Marianao and within the surroundings of Park Güell, have begun a refurbishment that will turn them into a new green space for residents’ everyday use.
The work will take around 24 months and responds to a long-standing demand in this area of Gràcia. The aim is to open up a site that has until now been inaccessible and turn it into a park with places to sit, walk, rest and meet.
The project will make use of the natural slope of the land to create different settings. There will be seating areas in the upper part, while shadier spaces will be created in the lower part, designed for taking shelter from the heat and spending time outdoors without relying solely on hard-surfaced squares or narrow streets.
The refurbishment will also include enclosed urban allotments in the central area, several meeting points and a small agora for community activities. The new slide planned for the slope will add a playful element to a space designed to combine strolling, play and neighbourhood life.
One of the important aspects will be improving pedestrian mobility. The internal routes will connect the d’Antequera and Marianao streets, making it easier to pass through an area with slopes and streets where any improvement in accessibility can make a big difference to daily life.
The intervention will respect much of the existing vegetation and preserve most of the viable trees. Two spaces dedicated to biodiversity will also be created, with bee shelters and educational signs to bring nature closer to those who use the garden.
The project includes the restoration of elements with historical value, such as the stone walls, the chapels beside the stairs and Font del Carbó itself, which is currently in very poor condition. That recovery will allow the new park to be not only a green space, but also a small fragment of the neighbourhood’s memory.
The opening of these gardens is part of the improvement plan for Park Güell and its surroundings through to 2027, funded by ticket revenue. When the work is finished, la Salut will gain more than a park: a corner closed off for years that will once again become part of everyday life in Gràcia.
