Young people in Madrid presented bold ideas to renew the city
Young architects from Madrid turned their dreams into projects that propose a complete rethink of the capital's urban parks, squares, and vacant lots.
Architecture students created 56 projects to transform eight areas of the city, and three of them received awards.
The first prize, worth 3,000 euros, went to Nina Élisabeth Méndez-Bisgaard and Maximilian Stjernström for their project to revitalise Bellas Vistas park and the Amaniel aqueduct: beneath the arches, plans call for the creation of a cultural and commercial corridor, as well as viewpoints.
Second place, with a prize of 2,000 euros, went to Natalia Díaz Amate and Sofía for the project «Raíces de agua», a water park above Plaza de Castilla, where water from the canal is transformed into elevated fountains and ponds.
Third place and 1,000 euros went to Elena M. Arenas for a multi-level vegetable garden at Antonio López 27, a zero-emission green space combining rest, therapy and the preservation of the natural connection with the Manzanares river.
Municipal authorities point out that the winning ideas will not necessarily be carried out, but they help to understand how young people see the future of Madrid’s public spaces.
