Barcelona’s municipal libraries had a record-breaking 2025: more than four million documents lent and a clear dominance of books, which accounted for 76% of the total. The City Council highlights a 2% increase in in-person loans and an 11% rise in digital ones. Among thousands of titles, some became genuine reading phenomena.
In adult fiction, Irene Solà’s novel “Canto jo i la muntanya balla” once again topped the ranking, consolidating its position as Barcelona residents’ favourite. Dolores Redondo’s “Esperando al diluvio” maintained its appeal and again ranked among the most requested titles, confirming the local taste for suspense and emotion.
Essays and wellbeing continue to gain ground. “Hábitos atómicos” and “El cerebro del adolescente” led the loans, alongside “Encuentra tu persona vitamina” and “La teva salut comença aquí”. Readers are increasingly seeking practical tools and books about psychology, health and neuroscience.
Among young people, there are few surprises: R. J. Palacio’s “Wonder” remains essential, accompanied by “L’assassina de Venècia”, “Wolfgang” and “Quan s’apaguen els llums”. These are stories that connect with emotions and personal conflicts, key ingredients for this audience.
In children’s books, series are sweeping the board. “L’Escola de Monstres” dominates among the youngest, while “Magic Animals” is the favourite of readers aged 7 to 10. For those over 11, Jeff Kinney and his “Diari d’en Greg” remain unbeatable. Knowledge books such as “Enigmes” and “Jocs de matemàtiques per a petits genis” show that learning through play never goes out of fashion.
Manga reigns in comics. Adults and young people opt for “My Hero Academia”, “Guardianes de la noche” and “Spy x Family”. Among younger readers, “One Piece”, “Bola de drac”, “Naruto” and “Detectiu Conan” retain their popularity, confirming loyalty to the great Japanese series.
