Manila shawls and nature set the cultural pulse in El Escorial

San Lorenzo de El Escorial's cultural calendar gets under way in earnest this year. The Casa de Cultura opens the season with a programme that invites visitors to explore local history and creativity, bringing together more than 60 exhibitions over the coming months. For those looking for different plans near Madrid, the programme begins with two exhibitions that engage in a dialogue between tradition and nature.

Until 28 February, the Sala Interior de Exposiciones hosts ‘La ruta del Galeón de Manila. La feliz unión entre Asia, Hispanoamérica y España’. This exhibition, promoted by the Comunidad de Madrid's Red ITINER, brings together Manila shawls from different periods and styles, which arrived in Spain via the historic trade route. The tour is completed by lacquered boxes, 16th-century silver coins, a model of the galleon and old postcards, pieces that help explain how these textiles became cultural icons.

At the same time, the Sala Félix Bernardino presents ‘Disonancia’ by Rebeca S. Lorbada until 22 February. The artist explores the beauty of nature and everyday life through painting, placing observation at the heart of her work. The programme continues from 27 February to 5 March with ‘Ecos de un instante’ by Concha Moras, a selection of landscapes and introspective scenes that seek beauty in the everyday.

The schedule remains lively in March. From the 6th to the 12th, MAKARIA (Macarena Alarcó) exhibits ‘Relatos de loza y papel’, a proposal in which colour and forms take centre stage. From the 13th to the 19th, Juan Ignacio de Frutos presents ‘Pinturaleza, Ecovida, Segunda vida’, a collection of sculptures made from reused wood that had previously been intended for firewood. The quarter closes from 20 to 26 March with Ricardo Tsai's oils in ‘Cada día es un buen día’.

In spring, from 6 to 17 April, the Sala Interior de Exposiciones will show ‘Círculos de acuarela’, with works by pupils of the Taller de Acuarela led by Leandro Antolí. The programme confirms that the Casa de Cultura continues to champion a balance between heritage, contemporary creation and local talent.

The Casa de Cultura de San Lorenzo de El Escorial has become a meeting point for those seeking cultural experiences outside Madrid's usual circuit.
