Ventas will cover the M-30 with gardens and a new link between neighbourhoods
The M-30 is starting to change its appearance near Ventas. Madrid has launched an intervention that will add 2,834 square metres of vertical gardens and improve the pedestrian connection between the Salamanca and Ciudad Lineal districts.
The works have an investment of 5.3 million euros and will continue until early 2027. The project will act on one of the capital’s busiest stretches, where the presence of major infrastructure has for years marked the separation between the two sides of the road.
The intervention will create a new 16,370-square-metre area above the M-30. The aim is to make walking routes easier and make an environment hitherto dominated by ramps, walls, traffic and level changes more pleasant.
The sides of the ramps connecting the M-30 with Calle de Alcalá and the bridge abutments will be covered with Mediterranean species. The vegetation will help reduce the infrastructure’s visual impact and provide an appearance that is more integrated into the urban landscape.
Much of the work will be carried out at night to reduce effects on traffic. Even so, temporary closures, narrowed lanes and changes to access may occur over the coming months in an area that is especially sensitive during peak hours.
The irrigation system will operate automatically and use reclaimed water from Canal de Isabel II. It will also have remote monitoring and a weather station to adjust consumption according to temperature, humidity and the plants’ needs.
A collector will make it possible to recover surplus water and avoid waste. Maintenance will be key to ensuring the gardens retain their appearance and do not become an installation that is difficult to sustain over time.
The project puts more than an aesthetic change on the table. Ventas will gain a clearer pedestrian route between neighbourhoods and less hostile infrastructure in an area where every crossing, ramp and access point shapes daily journeys.
