Barcelona moves La Rambla’s iconic flower stalls to Plaça Catalunya because of the works

The emblematic flower stalls on La Rambla are changing location because of the works. Eight kiosks will operate on the side pavement of Plaça Catalunya until the renovation is complete. The move ensures that residents and tourists can continue enjoying this Barcelona classic.

The familiar landscape of La Rambla changes this week for those walking through central Barcelona. The traditional flower kiosks, a symbol of the promenade, are temporarily moving to the side pavement of Plaça Catalunya because of renovation works that will transform La Rambla until 2027. The move affects eight of the stalls, which are already being installed in their new location so as not to interrupt flower sales to residents and visitors.

The City Council, through the Barcelona Municipal Markets Institute, has coordinated the relocation and temporary siting of the kiosks with the florists. The aim is for all of them to be operational by the middle of the week, ensuring that the activity does not stop during the works on the promenade. The decision allows one of the centre’s most recognisable traditions to remain alive, even amid urban transformation.

The new kiosks, designed specifically for selling flowers, began to be installed in February and have been adapted to make florists’ work easier during this transitional period. Once the works are finished, the stalls will return to their original location on La Rambla, recovering their historic place in the heart of the city.

Only the Flors Carolina kiosk, located at Rambla 93 and recognised for its design, will remain in its usual location throughout the renovation. This stall will retain its format and concession holder, consolidating its presence as one of the promenade’s landmarks.

La Rambla is much more than a tourist artery: it is an everyday setting for people who live and work in Barcelona. Its flower kiosks, present for more than a century, form part of the collective imagination and have survived urban changes, fashions and crises. The temporary relocation to Plaça Catalunya is an example of how the city seeks to preserve its traditions while modernising its most emblematic spaces.

New steel/fibreglass modules, windows/ventilation/accessible ramps, off-white colour integrated into the landscape, 400,000€ City Council cost. Flors Carolina (Rambla 93) remains in its original location because of its heritage value. Installed since February, already operational.
