Trains from Extremadura to Madrid will terminate at Leganés
Travellers going by Medium Distance train between Extremadura, Talavera de la Reina and Madrid will have to reorganise their journey in the coming days. From 17 to 22 July, these services will neither start nor finish at Atocha, but at Leganés station.
The change is due to improvement works that Adif is carrying out at Atocha Cercanías, one of Madrid’s most sensitive rail points. The work makes it necessary to adjust routes and temporarily move the terminus of these trains in order to reduce pressure on the station.
Renfe will allow travellers whose origin or destination is Atocha to complete the journey between Leganés and central Madrid using the C-5 Cercanías line. It will not be necessary to buy another ticket: the Media Distancia ticket will be enough to access this section.
The measure will particularly affect those travelling from or to Talavera de la Reina, Oropesa, Navalmoral de la Mata, Cáceres, Mérida or Badajoz who have Atocha as their final point. The journey will remain possible, but with an added change and a greater need to calculate timings.
The C-5 connects Leganés with Atocha through one of the most used lines of Cercanías Madrid. For many passengers, the change will mean getting off the Media Distancia train, changing to the metropolitan service and completing the journey to the centre with extra time allowed.
Renfe is providing information about these changes through its usual channels, including online sales and ticket machines. In some cases, the system will indicate which part of the journey is made by Cercanías so that the passenger knows the connection before travelling.
Larga Distancia trains, such as the Alvia services between Extremadura and Madrid, are not affected by this change and will continue to operate normally at Atocha. The change is limited to Media Distancia services linked to the Extremadura and Talavera corridor.
The situation leaves a clear picture of Madrid’s railway summer: necessary works, pressured stations and journeys that require more planning. For those travelling these days, the key will be to check the ticket, confirm the departure or arrival station and allow for the change at Leganés before heading to Atocha.
