Smart magnifiers in Galapagar open up reading to those who need it most

Everyday life in the Madrid mountains has gained a new ally for people who encounter barriers when reading. Biblioteca Municipal Ricardo León de Galapagar has incorporated smart magnifiers capable of reading aloud and translating printed texts into more than 30 languages. This development allows people with visual impairments to access books, magazines and documents autonomously and easily.

The operation is straightforward: simply hold the device around 15 centimetres from the text for the magnifier to capture the information and turn it into audio, aiding comprehension without depending on others. According to data from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística, more than 1,580,000 people in Spain have some kind of visual difficulty, a figure that shows the importance of initiatives such as this.

Library staff have received specific training from LUP’s founding team, guaranteeing close support and an accessible experience for people who decide to try the technology. The measure not only improves users’ autonomy, but also strengthens the library’s role as an inclusive space open to the entire community.
