Madrid opens a renewed La Viña park: greener, more accessible, and designed for the neighbourhood

The space, which covers 43,693 square metres, now has a completely renewed look: 67 trees and more than 8,000 shrubs of species adapted to Madrid’s climate, chosen to minimise allergies and reduce maintenance needs. The project has turned this place into an example of sustainable urban planning. Permeable paving has been installed to filter water, along with a low-consumption irrigation system and drainage capable of storing and reusing rainwater thanks to trenches and underground tanks. These changes aim not only to beautify the area, but also to make it more resilient to heatwaves and episodes of heavy rain.

Accessibility has been a key part of the design: slopes have been softened, staircases renovated, and six new paths created following routes already used by local residents. Each area has paving suited to its use, from permeable paving stones in walking areas to rubber in children’s play spaces, and river sand on sports courts. The park also offers more leisure options: children’s areas with inclusive play equipment, a biosaludable circuit for low-intensity exercise, a calisthenics area for outdoor workouts, benches, fountains, and chess tables. With this renovation, La Viña not only gains more greenery and services, but also reaffirms itself as a vital meeting point for Puente de Vallecas.
