Cycling gains ground in Madrid with more bike lanes and record numbers of users

Madrid is moving towards more diverse mobility with the expansion of its cycling network and the boost from Bicimad. Since 2019, the city has added 120 kilometres of cycling infrastructure, consolidating a change that is already visible in its streets and neighbourhoods.

The cycling network reaches 1,167 kilometres, with segregated lanes and cycle streets playing a particularly important role. This development has made it easier for more and more people in Madrid to incorporate the bicycle into their daily journeys, even in areas where it was previously unusual.

The growth of Bicimad has been key. The system has accumulated more than 32 million trips and exceeded 340,000 active users. The fleet, with more than 8,000 electric bicycles, is used several times a day, reflecting its integration into the urban routine.

The decisive leap came in 2023, with the service renewal and expansion of stations. Since then, journeys have multiplied and monthly records have been reached, with figures exceeding one and a half million trips.

This change is not merely a passing trend. The bicycle is becoming established as a real alternative to the car and traditional public transport, especially on short and neighbourhood-to-neighbourhood trips. The transformation is already part of daily life and anticipates a Madrid where cycling will become increasingly common.
