Madrid expands its Operación Asfalto: 111 more streets added to the summer plan
This summer, asphalt takes centre stage in Madrid. The traditional road resurfacing campaign, known as Operación Asfalto, is growing significantly: in addition to the 256 streets planned at the start of the season, 111 more are now being added, bringing the total to 367 projects across the city.
Neighbourhoods such as Chamartín, Tetuán, Chamberí, Latina and Carabanchel will see some of their busiest roads renewed, from Paseo de la Castellana to Calle General Ricardos. The extension involves adding 296,144 square metres of paving, bringing the total surface area to 900,569 m2 and the overall budget to 17.7 million euros, an increase of five million over the initial investment. Around 105,000 tonnes of asphalt will be used, much of it made with mixes that are more sustainable than traditional ones, with the aim of reducing noise, improving air quality and extending the useful life of the streets.
In addition to the aesthetic improvement and comfort for pedestrians and drivers, the plan seeks to preserve the road heritage and strengthen safety. Operación Asfalto joins other major projects under way in the capital, such as the arrival of driverless trains on Metro Line 6, the extension of Line 11 and the construction of the future Parque Castellana. This summer, Madrid stands firm on renewed paving.
