Veranos de la Villa begins in Madrid with a free party at Matadero devoted to songs that have marked every summer since 1985. The city will welcome the summer season with music, dancing and nostalgia in an open plan for those seeking a different night without spending money.
The event will take place on Tuesday 7 July, from 20:30. For around three hours, Matadero Madrid will become a huge dance floor with a session led by Fernandisco, who will revisit live the great popular anthems associated with summer.
The nod to 1985 is no coincidence. That was the year Los Veranos de la Villa, one of Madrid's most recognisable cultural programmes, was born. The party therefore connects the start of the festival with almost four decades of songs that have played on the radio, on terraces, at street fairs and at family parties.
The selection will include names highly recognisable to several generations: Georgie Dann, Shakira, Rosalía, King África, Sonia y Selena, Lou Bega, Jarabe de Palo and Jennifer López, among others. Catchy songs that many associate with trips, hot nights, beach bars or neighbourhood celebrations.
The proposal will not be limited to listening to music. A dance group will accompany the session with popular choreographies such as La Macarena, the Aserejé and Danza Kuduro, seeking to get the public involved rather than simply watching from a distance.
Admission will be free and the activity is designed for all audiences. This makes the start of Los Veranos de la Villa a convenient option for those who want to do something different during the week, especially in a city where outdoor plans become more important as the sun goes down.
Matadero Madrid once again positions itself as one of summer's major cultural venues. Its location next to Legazpi and the Manzanares river makes it easy to get there by public transport and combine the party with a walk along Madrid Río or dinner in the area.
The night will also serve as a reminder of what Los Veranos de la Villa mean for Madrid: culture spread across the city, accessible plans and gatherings capable of bringing residents, visitors and different generations together around the same song.
