Madrid increases aid for businesses affected by long works

The measure seeks to ease a situation well known in many neighbourhoods and municipalities: streets dug up for months, fewer customers passing by, difficult access, noise, barriers, dust and a fall in sales that can put small businesses under severe strain.

Until now, the maximum aid was €5,000. Under the new scheme, the limit rises by 44%, an important difference for shops, bars, hairdressers, workshops or local premises that depend heavily on daily footfall.

This year the call will have half a million euros, an amount that may be increased depending on demand. The aim is to compensate expenses linked to the loss of activity caused by works that directly affect the area around the establishment.

For traders, the problem is not usually only the duration of the works, but the uncertainty. Many businesses do not know how long their doorway will be partly blocked, the pavement occupied or access made more inconvenient for regular customers, suppliers and delivery drivers.

The aid arrives at a time when Madrid and its region are carrying out major transport, infrastructure and urban-improvement works in succession. Those works may be necessary to modernise the city, but in the short term they completely change the commercial routine of a street.

The impact is particularly felt in neighbourhood businesses. When works reduce the flow of people, many customers change route, shop elsewhere or postpone visits. For a small premises, a few weeks of decline may be manageable; several months can become a serious problem.
