Madrid breaks adoption records: almost all abandoned dogs find a new home
Madrid has managed to find homes for almost all of its abandoned dogs, making adoption a massive success and setting a new record.
Last year, 90% of abandoned dogs in the Community of Madrid were adopted, six percentage points more than in 2024. In total, more than 6,500 animals, including dogs and cats, found a new family.
This achievement is the result of coordinated work by shelters, local councils and regional adoption programmes. Throughout the year, campaigns and open days were organised which helped hundreds of pets find a home.
In addition, the introduction of digital tools and the network of shelters, including the Centro Integral de Acogida de Animales de Colmenar Viejo, has made it easier to manage adoptions and return lost animals to their owners through a microchip and QR code. Thanks to these initiatives, dog abandonment has decreased and more and more animals are returning safely to their families.
