Madrid celebrates 2 May with a sweet treat of its own: free tasting of the Banderita Madrileña

With the end of Semana Santa still fresh, Madrid swaps torrijas for a dessert that carries its identity in every bite. During the Fiestas del 2 de Mayo, a day packed with family activities, music and tradition, an unexpected protagonist steals the spotlight: the Banderita Madrileña, a sweet full of history and local flavour. On 2 May, in the heart of the city, the Centro de Turismo de Sol (Puerta del Sol, 5) will offer a free tasting of this emblematic dessert. The event, promoted by the Comunidad de Madrid together with ASEMPAS, seeks to highlight a pastry creation born in the late 1980s and turn it into an edible symbol of Madrid pride. The Banderita Madrileña is much more than a cake: it is an artisanal creation made of almond sponge with orange diplomat cream, covered with strawberry jelly and decorated with seven white stars handmade from marzipan, fondant or chocolate, echoing the region’s flag. A sweet tribute to Madrid, designed to share with family and savour with pride.
